The Casa delle Traduzioni in Rome was founded in response to an ever-growing interest in the role and task of the translator. Centres for translation such as the Casa already exist in Europe and around the world; they promote the work of translation and assist translators in finding much needed resources and lodgings.
The Casa delle Traduzioni mission is to highlight the work of the translator and to promote the Italian language and literature throughout the world. The space includes a research library for translators as well as accommodation. The Casa delle Traduzioni envisions itself as a centre for research, a place where translators from any country in the world can meet up and exchange ideas, and a unique, specialized library.
The Casa delle Traduzioni has a collection that includes: a collection of translations of Elsa Morante’s works donated by Carlo Cecchi;a permanent exhibition of photographs of Italian writers by Rino Bianchi;copies of all the translations published by Europa Editions and Voland, two publishers who have “adopted” the Casa and agreed to donate their books to our library.

Casa delle Traduzioni, a specialized research center and library dedicated to translation, has accommodation available for selected foreign translators – preferably literary translators – who are translating the work of Italian authors into their own native language. However, from March 2014, as an experiment, applications will be accepted not only from translators working from Italian into other languages – who will still have precedence – but also those working from other languages into Italian, and from translators working in other language combinations.
Our guests have the opportunity to work in a quiet, friendly environment and experience full immersion in Italian culture, staying in a central area of Rome near Piazza Barberini which is also convenient to transport.
Translators from any country are welcome, as long as they have the following prerequisites:
- at least two translations of fiction or non-fiction literary works, graphic novels, poetry or plays already published
- a current translation contract
Guests of the Casa delle Traduzioni have unlimited access to the library, and living quarters with two bedrooms and a shared kitchen. The period of stay varies from two weeks to 45 days, depending on the availability of places, the quality of the translation project, and the length of stay indicated in the application.
Candidates for a residency must submit the following:
- the application form completed in full
- a brief CV and biographical note
- a copy of their translation contract
Applications are examined by a committee of translation professionals and assessed by the staff of the Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma. Our guest quarters and library are closed between 1 August and 15 September and during the Christmas and Easter holidays.
• € 20 per day
• € 30 contribution to administration costs
